Summary

Bulma began as a secondary lead, though the series soon dialled her role back; she remains an important supporting figure through most of it all the same. The character is a direct parody of Xuanzang from the Chinese novel Journey to the West. For all that she parodies a monk, her Japanese name, Buruma, comes from a brand of gym shorts widely worn by girls in Japan, and the adapted spelling Bulma lands on "bloomers," a popular brand of women's underwear in the early twentieth century. She is the second character the series introduces. Early on she has invented the Dragon Radar and is hunting the legendary Dragon Balls, meaning to wish for the perfect boyfriend once she has them. Searching for one nearby, she runs into Son Goku, and discovers that the four-star ball she is after is the one he inherited from his Grandpa Gohan. Goku loves the thing and believes his grandfather's spirit lives inside it, so he will not hand it over; Bulma asks to borrow it instead, offering to take him along on her travels. From there they team up to find the rest, and the adventure begins. In the later, more action-driven stretches there is not much room for a genius, but Bulma keeps appearing as a supporting character, helping Goku and his friends with her gadgets and carrying on a decidedly rocky relationship with Yamcha.
